Lunuganga: Be Inspired

A couple of weeks ago I stayed at Lunuganga in Sri Lanka – the country home of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. He started his professional life as a lawyer, but his real passion lay with architecture and garden design.

Lunuganga was his first muse and remained his laboratory for new ideas, even as he became one of Asia’s most influential and prolific architects.

Lunuganga was lovingly created by Bawa over many years. He was a complete perfectionist and thought about not just his immediate buildings and gardens, but the surrounding landscapes and panoramas. He moved mountains of earth to adjust the skyline, paid a priest to paint a temple he overlooked while having breakfast and sent paint and terracotta roof tiles to disguise an ugly government pump house. He even bought the entire whale-shaped island in the body of water which the main house overlooks and had it protected as a nature reserve for birds and the natural jungle vegetation.

It is without a doubt one of the most inspiring places I have ever visited, blending inside and outside space and classical and Asian design influences. I hope you enjoy and are inspired by these images too!
