Let me introduce you to Coco Fennell (daughter of jewellery legend Theo) – fashion blogger, Storm model and now designer of her own eponymous line of fun, feminine dresses. Coco, who has a degree in graphic design, worked with illustrator Jennifer Pitchers from her studio/flat in London’s Shoreditch, to create wonderful prints based around quirky motifs like squids or men fencing, alongside more traditionally pretty floral designs. On a trip to Delhi the designs were brought to life and are now on sale directly from cocofennell.com
They are exactly the sort of dresses I for one love to wear and can usually find only from vintage stalls and shops. They’re really original, incredibly easy to wear and styled accordingly are perfect for everything from a wedding to a picnic to an ordinary day at work. And you won’t need to max out your credit card to get your hands on them either- prices range from about £50 -£160.
I had a chat with Coco about what makes this talented girl tick:
Your distinctive designs are unlike anything else out there. Who or what inspires you?
I love anything a bit silly- anything a child would like, I probably would too! So at the moment I’m seeking inspiration from children’s illustration and toys, but for the more mainstream prints I love vintage looking florals.
What sort of girl do you imagine wearing your dresses?
I wanted to make dresses that would suit all different shapes and sizes so I can’t really imagine a set girl. Though my model Nettie looks rather beautiful in them!
You’re a Chelsea girl moved to the East End. Where do you feel most at home in London?
I love Chelsea for a bit of peace and quiet but I think the East is more fun for young people to see bands and go out and it has loads of great restaurants.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
I’d love to travel around America. It fascinates me… But I’m super happy living in England! I love grey days and rain- the opposite of most people.
If we wanted to stalk you, where would we find you hanging out?
Probably stuffing my face full of pizza somewhere or hanging at a friends house. I don’t like going out to clubs very much. I’m old before my time!
And what would you be wearing? What’s your failsafe look for day?
For daytime I’m usually just working from home, so probably jeans and a big jumper!
And for night?
I like to wear tight cotton jumpsuits with lots of fake gold jewellery and massive heels.
With Theo Fennell for a father, you must love your “rocks”- what sort of jewellery appeals to you?
I love big gaudy jewellery huge gem encrusted rings and massive fake gold hoop earrings. I can’t afford the real stuff yet! I love Mawi. I’d love to get my hands on the Claw Crystal & Spike Necklace. Actually I’d take it all!
Mawi Claw Crystal and Spike Crystal Necklace £386
I love the laid back style of your “look book”- is it shot in your flat? What’s your interiors style like? Lots of people are quite intimated by getting it right in interior design- any tips?
It is indeed shot in my flat. I love collecting random pieces and throwing them all together, Spitalfields antiques market and etsy.com are the best places to find great random stuff.
What are your pipe dreams for the future?
I would love to keep expanding the brand, getting more adventurous with design and make many more of my own prints.
