House of Hackney present The Gin Den

Launched in April in Mawi’s very own Dalston, House of Hackney is an interiors company with a great sense of OTT, baroque style! Described as ‘Colefax and Fowler on acid’ they produce bed linen, furniture, fabrics and home accessories all with an irreverent British twist that delights in the kitsch and the out-moded.

Their brave style statements have gained them considerable attention and they have collaborated with cool US retailer Opening Ceremony to create a clothing range which will be available in-store and online in the autumn.

And Opening Ceremony aren’t the only ones snapping up the opportunity to work with such a distinctive brand: Bistrotheque-  an East End fashionista’s favourite, have collaborated with House of Hackney on a Victorian gin den which will open on July 27th and run until January 2012. If the lampshades and fabrics are anything to go by it looks like it’ll be camp, decadent and delicious!

Meet ‘Twelve’

We couldn’t show you photographer Prarthna Singh’s images before the official opening, which took place last night at Le Mill, despite the previous day’s terrible events in Mumbai- a city we all love and that I currently call home.

We’re delighted to showcase the whole series for you here now. ‘Twelve’ is a collaboration between Mawi London and Prarthna Singh.

Prarthna does a lot of editorial work for magazines like Vogue and GQ but Mawi’s designs inspired her to do something different- she wanted to photograph the jewellery worn by real girls who are all strong, independent women trying to carve out their own careers and paths. And she wanted to capture them in their ‘natural habitats’- at home, at work, in their private spaces. There’s a furniture designer, photographed in her workshop; an aspiring photographer reclining on her bed like a modern Venus; an editor, pulling back the curtain in her bedroom and letting the sunlight peek through…

What they share is a determination to follow their personal dreams and ambitions. It’s very much the same woman that Mawi designs for, and there’s a strength in the jewellery too that communicates that.

We’re used to seeing Mawi designs in the pages of fashion magazines, and on street style blogs, this is something completely fresh and unique. And, like any true collaboration, Prarthna has been inspired by Mawi and we’re inspired by her too…

Pictures of what we got up to at the opening party to follow soon…
