I’ve always thought that jewels get a rough deal. So often it’s a necklace or cuff that falls victim to Coco Chanel’s fashion mantra, “Before you leave the house, take one thing off.” One is hardly likely to set out shoe-less or discard our skirts, so it’s those carefully planned accessories that get culled. It’s fashion tragedy!

Jewellery can set the tone of your outfit more than a heel shape or handbag could ever do and I’m of the opinion that layering several pieces will always look stylish and chic. Whenever I’m planning a fashion shoot, although I start with the clothes I want, jewellery is as important a component as any other extra. Whether you wear a couple of narrow silver bangles or a neon crystal cuff, the message your style and personality states will be obvious.

At the moment I’m obsessed with clip-on earrings (at 31 I am still too scared to have my ears pierced), rose gold (the most flattering tone of metal ever invented and perfect on summer tanned skin), and heirloom pieces.

Moving ahead to the Autumn collections, jewellery that looks like it’s been in your family for years will be vital. Echoing the Byzantine and Medieval trends, heavily encrusted cuffs, collars, rings and earrings should be added to every new season outfit. And before you leave the house, my rule for the season is to add one more piece from Mawi to your look. These are my top 5 favourite Mawi pieces on-line now:

Rose Gold Honeycomb Cuff

One of my go-to styling tricks is to wear matching cuffs on both wrists. Double cuffs looks edgy and punkish but because they are matching it’s still a very chic, put-together way of accessorizing.

Pearl Floret Leaf Motif Earrings in Hematite

Like a glamorous memento mori, these earrings are beautifully intricate with delicate pearl beads. I love the way the skulls look angry!

Silver and Bubblegum Pink double Claw-Set Pearl Bracelet

It’s so clever the way that Mawi turns a classic tennis bracelet into a cultish design. Pink and apple green pearls are a perfect colour combination.

Ring with Emerald Centrestone and Crystals

The cut of the crystals and tones of this delicious cocktail ring remind me of the stunning jewellery created in Jaipur at the Gem Palace where they use traditional Indian techniques.

Minnie Box Chain and Cabouchon Necklace

When it was announced that Mawi was collaborating with Disney Couture there were squeals of excitement in the Stylist office. And who can resist jewellery that combines our favourite cartoon character (sorry, Mickey) with shiny jewels?

All the best,

Alexandra Fullerton
